Getting into GW? - Guild Wars Forums

Hi all, thanks for looking

I'd like some opinions on the best way to get into GW at this late stage...I've never played before so was wondering where to start. Should I start at the beginning with GW Platinum or jump into GW Nightfall. I hear GW has a good campaign and can be soloed, I'll be playing mostly in RPG, so I don't mind but I'd like to party up for some of the game. One last ?, If I start in GW this late will it be possible to catch up to the main players?? tx

Well i started 4 months ago so could be considered fairly recent. I have beaten all 4 campaigns but have not gone to any of the "elite" areas like FoW, UW. I started with prophecies and spent a lot of time in the starting area getting used to the game then quickly added on the other campaigns. Starting with nightfall is nice for heros right away, but proph + eye of the north can get you heros relatively quickly too. Prophecies is always a good place to start.

well it depends on how often you play. Some players easily catch up to other players while other players never catch up to other players. I had a friend i helped get Rank 3 for HoH and in like a month he had Rank 9. He was a player who easyer caught up to other players. just depends if you will do it or not.

The Platinum Edition is a great place to start. It's basically two games for the price of one, and as it contains Prophecies and Eye of the North it has most of the best game content for you to enjoy (plus Prophecies is a great way to start with the game as it gives you lots of free skills and a nice easy learning curve which gives you plenty of time to get used to things).

Nightfall is another good place to start - it offers the widest selection of heroes which can make playing PvE a lot easier. Although setting up heroes as a newcomer can be difficult as you'll find yourself more limited in the number of skills you have available for them. My suggestion would be to start with the Platinum Edition, and then add Nightfall to it as your next campaign if you find that GW is a game that you really want to play.

And yes, you can catch up to other players. GW is a game that relies mainly on player skill and doesn't have any uber equipment. Once you get yourself some max equipment (basic max equipment is extremely cheap, and a lot of of it you can even get for free if you take advantage of collector NPCs) you'll find yourself catching up to the more experienced players pretty quickly.

A good way to judge where to start is to ask what pace of gameplay you prefer.

Prophecies eases you into each segment of the game, but the time to max level is also drawn out the most.

Factions has the least amount of "break-in" time, but you get to the meat of the game more quickly.

Nightfall is somewhere between the 2, and it is also the most recent full-fledged campaign, so it has the most features.

Also keep in mind that Eye of the North doesn't add more character slots, and really is only meant for level 20 characters. Factions & Nightfall, if added to the other campaigns, grants 2 additional character slots, as well as adding 2 additional professions each.

Overall, though, if you're fairly experienced w/ computer games/RPGs, I'd start w/ Nightfall. It also adds heroes, which are customizable henchmen, which also makes things more enjoyable...
